Abstract

1421203 Steel producing method and apparatus PENNSYLVANIA ENG CORP 14 March 1973 [27 March 1972] 12255/73 Heading C7D [Also in Division F4B] Ferrous metal containing carbon is treated in the furnace shown in Fig. 1 by injecting an oxygen containing gas and a fuel through tuyeres 11, terminating the delivering of the oxygen containing gas and fuel, heating the molten metal with an electrode 17 to form a molten pool of metal which covers the tuyeres, terminating the heating of the metal and injecting oxygen and a hydrocarbon shielding fluid (e.g. propane) in surrounding relation to the oxygen through tuyeres 31 and 32 respectively. Argon may be introduced together with oxygen during the oxidation period to promote decarburization e.g. in stainless steel production. The oxygen containing gas may comprise argon, lime, limestone, fluospor, burnt lime, iron oxide and carbonaceous material entrained therein to form a slag which may be removed via port 24. After the termination of the injection of the oxygen containing gas an inert gas may be injected through tuyere passage 31, hydrocarbon fluid through tuyere passage 32 or an inert gas optionally with entrained lime and iron ore may be passed through both passages 31 and 32. Argon or nitrogen and entrained powdered carbonaceous material may be injected into the melt after the termination of the oxygen and hydrocarbon shielding fluid supply and prior to discharging the molten metal through pouring spout 22.
