Abstract
Pig-iron is refined into steel in a rotary furnace having an inclined axis by blowing oxygen into the furnace under a pressure of 1 - 3 kg./sq.cm. through a lance movable in the vertical plane of the furnace, wherein the distance between the lance tip and the surface of the metal bath is increased and/or the inclination of the lance to the horizontal plane is decreased as the oxygen delivery rate is increased during refining so that the ratio of the amount of oxygen entering the bath to that amount available in the furnace remains constant.
