Abstract
A method of refining pig iron to steel comprises surface blowing with oxygen until the carbon content of the metal is up to 0.05% higher than that desired, adding a drying and dephosphorizing agent, agitating the bath, and retaining the dried slag in the furnace for use as the first slag for the succeeding charge. The process may be carried out in a Kaldo furnace and, after addition of the drying and dephosphorizing agent, e.g. lime, in amount 1-3% of the total weight of metal, the furnace may be rotated for less than one minute before tapping.
