Abstract

In a process for the manufacture of low-nitrogen steel, molten pig iron from the blast-furnace is blown with a blast of oxygen, or containing more oxygen than does air, to reduce the silicon content and produce an acid slag before being charged into the converter. The silicon content is preferably reduced from above 0.5 per cent. to below 0.35 per cent. or even to below 0.20 per cent. in the pre-treatment, and an oxygen-enriched blast may also be used in the converter. The pretreatment may take place in an auxiliary converter without the addition of slag-forming materials.
