Abstract
In a process for the production of steel of low nitrogen content (0.004-0.008 per cent) in a converter of the Bessemer or similar type with blow-holes at the bottom, blowing takes place with the converter inclined, but not raised by more than 30 degrees above the lowest position of complete blow-hole submersion, part at least of the blowing being effected with oxygen-enriched air, the available oxygen, including that released from oxygen-containing materials such as ores or limestone during this period, being at least 30 per cent and preferably less than 60 per cent by volume of the blast. The oxygen is preferably employed for the last 1-3 minutes of the decarburizing period, and the converter has blow-holes of preferably 20-30 mm. in diameter some of which, if it is a Bessemer converter, may be blocked up.
