Abstract

A process for dephosphorising ferrous metals containing carbon without substantially reducing the carbon content comprises introducing below the surface of the molten metal an oxidizing gas containing more than 22 per cent by volume of free oxygen and a metallic compound which reacts with oxidized phosphorus to form a metallic phosphate. The gas may be introduced into a ladle or other vessel through a pipe penetrating below the surface of the metal. Oxygen-enriched air with or without a proportion of carbon dioxide may be used. The metal may also be treated as it flows along a channel having dams to prevent slag passing along with the metal. The metal compound may be lime, limestone, magnesite, magnesia, burnt dolomite, soda, sodium silicate, or mixtures thereof or calcium ferrite or calcium-magnesium ferrite. The compound may be added in solid or liquid form or may be ground and added to the stream of oxidizing gas. Metallic calcium or magnesium may be added to the compound. Aluminium, silicon, or manganese may be added to the metal before blowing to improve the heat-producing properties.
