Abstract
Steel is manufactured from pig iron by blowing oxygen, or a gas enriched with oxygen, on to the surface of the molten metal to form a reaction zone of small area and high temperature and at the same time adding 30-50 per cent of the lime required to combine with the phosphorus in the metal, the remainder being added in portions, to form a liquid highly reactive slag mainly consisting of lime ferrite. The slag may contain fluorspar and the metal may be covered with a slag layer containing 30-50 per cent of the lime necessary to combine with the phosphorus before commencing the blow. The remainder of the slag may be added as a liquid or a solid. The blow is stopped when the carbon has reached the required value.
