Abstract
A process for the treatment of molten ferrous metal comprises feeding solid material in suspension in a low-pressure gas through the central passage of a lance having two concentric passages and feeding a high-pressure gas through the outer passage of the lance to provide a high-velocity jet directed towards the surface of the metal. The high-pressure gas may be oxygen or another oxidizing gas and the low-pressure gas may be oxidizing, reducing or neutral, e.g. oxygen, carbon monoxide, nitrogen, propane, or coke oven gas. The solid material may be slag-forming, e.g. lime or limestone, or may affect the composition of the metal, e.g. carburizing agents. p Dephosphorization may be accelerated by the addition of lime, iron ore, and graphite without affecting any alteration to the carbon content of the metal. A solid charge may be melted by passing fuel gas through the central passage and high-pressure oxygen through the outer passage.
