Abstract
Steel is produced by refining pig iron in a basically lined rotary furnace using an oxidizing gas or gaseous mixture injected from above the bath, gas loaded with finely divided basic material being directed on to the lining of the rotary furnace or on to the melt close to the lining. The basic material may be one or more of iron oxide, manganese oxide, magnesian lime, or magnesian limestone. There may be separate gases for the supply of basic material and for refining, or oxygen loaded with basic material may be directed on to the melt close to the lining. The nozzles used to direct basic material on to the lining may be fixed, or may move in a direction parallel with the furnace axis. Alternatively, fixed nozzles may be directed at the portions of the lining subject to severest wear while the rest is treated by moving nozzles.
