Abstract
In a process for treating molten iron or steel by blowing with a stream of gas containing solid reagents a nozzle having two concentric passages is used, a high pressure stream of gas being supplied through the inner passage while the solid matter is suspended in a low pressure stream of gas supplied through the outer passage. The same or different gases may be used for the two streams. As solid materials, fluorspar, lime, bauxite, iron ore, graphite, coal and coke are referred to, while the carrier gas may be oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, propane or coke oven gas. By feeding in a mixture of lime and graphite, it is possible to reduce the phosphorus and sulphur content of the iron without decarburization. The nozzle may be used to melt a solid charge by passing high-pressure oxygen through the inner passage and low pressure fuel gas through the outer.
