Abstract
Low-carbon chrome steel or chrome-iron alloys are made from a chromium-iron mixture rich in carbon, with minimal transfer of Cr to the slag layer, by passing O2 and a finely divided carbonaceous material, e.g. powdered coal, in a carrier gas, e.g. CO2, through adjacent feeder pipes into the molten metal. As the C content of the melt is lowered from 0.2 to 0.05% the gas flows are adjusted so that the molar ratio O2:C gradually changes from an initial 1:0.1 to a final 1:0.9. Gas feed is 3-100 l per kg of carbonaceous material. High quality low carbon Fe/Cr alloys can be made from the product of reducing chromite with C instead of the more expensive alumino-thermic reduction.
