Abstract

Metallurgical processes, e.g. refining crude iron or steel, or producing alloys, are carried out by blowing an oxygen-containing gas, e.g. pure oxygen, on to a molten charge disposed in a refractory lined vessel, e.g. a converter, in the form of a hollow jet of cylindrical or conical shape to form an annular reaction zone on the surface of the molten charge, and simultaneously adding finely divided solid admixtures into the vessel without using a pneumatic carrier medium through the jet interior and into the annular reaction zone. The admixtures may be formed by a mixture of slag forming materials such as CaO, Fe, Si, Mn, Al, Fe-Si or Fe-Mn, and optionally alloying materials added as oxides, e.g. Cr, Mo, Mn oxides, or ores containing such oxides with reducing substances, e.g. fine coal or Al powder. Granular or powdered carbonaceous materials, e.g. coke, lignite or coal, may be introduced into the vessel as admixtures with or without other finely divided materials during the main boiling period of the process, preferably between the third and fifteenth minute of the blowing operation. The supply of blowing gas is adjusted to the introduction of carbonaceous materials to obtain an oxidizing, a neutral or reducing atmosphere in the vessel. The atmosphere may be changed from reducing to oxidizing in the conversion of an iron charge into steel to adjust the carbon content of the charge.
