Abstract
A process for the treatment of molten ferrous metal comprises blowing an oxidizing gas on to or into the molten metal and introducing below the surface of the metal powdered or granular carburizing material in suspension in a carrier gas. The carrier gas may be an inert gas, e.g. nitrogen, carbon dioxide, or steam, and the carburniing material may be graphite, anthracite, coke, pitch, coal, or tar. The oxidizing gas, e.g. oxygen, oxygen enriched air, and mixtures of oxygen with carbon dioxide, steam, or an inert gas containing over 25% of oxygen by volume, may be used as the carrier gas if due regard is given to the fire hazard, and slag forming materials e.g. lime, iron oxide, fluorspar or bauxite, may be added to the oxidizing gas. The metal may be contained in a furnace, a converter, a mixer, or a ladle.
