Abstract

1,251,996. Desulphurizing iron and steel. HOESCH A.G. Nov.5, 1968 [Nov.9, 1967], No.52420/68. Heading C7D. Sulphur is converted into volatile compounds by simultaneously adding lime to the bath and blowing in a gaseous hydrocarbon under non- oxidizing conditions, the hydrocarbon being shielded to prevent decomposition before it enters the melt. Natural gas may be used, and may contain lime in suspension; alternatively the bath may be covered with lime and the gas blown thereon, or the gas may be injected from below through a porous plug. Other desulphurizers such as calcium carbide may be used in addition to the lime, while following desulphurization nitrogen may be bubbled through the bath, or vacuum treatment may be applied, to remove hydrogen. To exclude oxygen the bath may be initially covered with a hood, with a layer of slag, or with a layer of powdered desulphurizer, or inert gas may be blown on to it.
