Abstract
1336357 Deoxidizing steel ALLEGHENY LUDLUM INDUSTRIES Inc 24 Sept 1971 [25 Sept 1970] 44625/71 Heading C7D A method of deoxidizing molten metal while maintaining a carbon level in a melt equal to or lower than the carbon level which was present prior to deoxidizing which comprises introducing a hydrocarbon such as methane and a diluent gas such as argon into a vessel containing molten metal, said hydrocarbon deoxidizer reacting with oxygen within said metal to form gaseous carbon compounds which exit from said vessel, determining the effect of the hydrocarbon deoxidizer and diluent gas upon the carbon content of the metal and controlling the proportion of hydrocarbon deoxidizer to diluent gas so that the average rate of carbon leaving said vessel is equal to or greater than the average rate of carbon being introduced into said vessel. The hydrocarbon deoxidizer and diluent gas may be blown into said molten metal or on to its surface.
