Abstract

1300344 Purifying steel ALLEGHENY LUDLUM INDUSTRIES Inc 19 April 1971 [2 March 1970] 23629/71 Heading C7D In the dynamically balanced decarburization of molten steel, the vessel containing the steel is flushed with a diluent gas (e.g. Ar), gaseous oxidant is introduced into the vessel to initiate decarburization, the flow rate of the input gases and the composition of the effluent gases are measured to determine the rate of carbon removal and the oxidizer conversion efficiency for that flow rate, the oxidant flow rate is then increased in predetermined amounts with alternate calculation of oxidizer conversion efficiency until the flow rate is maximized for a conversion efficiency above a predetermined value. The diluent gas flow rate may then be decreased in predetermined amounts with gas conversion efficiency calculations so long as the efficiency remains above the required minimum. The oxidant may be introduced by introduced by top blowing or beneath the surface of the melt. Reference is made to the treatment of Cr-containing steels with less slagging of Cr.
