Abstract
1430375 Making ferritic stainless steel KLOCKNER-WERKE AG 28 Aug 1973 [15 Sept 1972] 40460/73 Heading C7D Low carbon ferritic stainless steel of composition 12 to 23% Cr and 0À01 to 0À08% C is prepared by oxidizing low phosphorus crude iron to form a low nitrogen mild steel in a bottom or side blowing converter, deslagging the steel melt, heating the deslagged melt whilst adding lime and heating agents (e.g. Si, Al, CaSi) to a temperature above 1700‹C and then alloying with ferrochrome without interruption of the oxygen flow so that the carbon content of the melt does not exceed 0À5% and subsequently supplying an inert gas (e.g. argon, nitrogen or mixture thereof) to the oxygen stream so that the carbon monoxide partial pressure does not exceed 76 Torr where a final carbon content of 0À01 to 0À02% is required. The preoxidizing and deslagging steps may be dispensed with by using preoxidized and slag free B.O.F. steel and the chromium containing slag present after the completion of the oxidation process may be reduced using carbon free reducing agents (e.g. FeSi, CaSi and Al) while blowing in argon or nitrogen or a mixture thereof. Alloying elements for correction of the final analysis (e.g. Si, Mn or Cr) may be added to the melt during or after the slag removal.
