Abstract
1396317 Decarburizing alloys UDDEHOLMS AB 5 Oct 1972 [6 Oct 1971 28 Feb 1972] 46507/71 and 9162/72 Heading C7D A method of decarburizing alloys containing at least 10 wt per cent of chromium together with a major proportion of iron, cobalt and/or nickel, comprises introducing oxygen to form carbon monoxide with the carbon, and simultaneously or subsequently introducing sufficient steam and/or ammonia to lower the carbon monoxide partial pressure below the equilibrium pressure for oxidation of carbon or chromium while keeping the volume ratio of oxygen to steam/ammonia below 3:1. The alloys refined may be stainless steels or nickel- or cobaltbased alloys. The temperature of the decarburization should be 1550-1800C, which may be achieved by oxidation of any silicon present in the melt; any chromium which is oxidized collects in a slag and may be recovered with ferrosilicon reductant. The refining is performed in a converter provided with coaxial inlet tubes, the inner tubes admitting oxygen, and nitrogen/argon as scavengers after the decarburization, while steam is passed through the outer tubes.
