Abstract

A ferrous metal charge is refined by the action of a flame fed by oxygen and a gaseous carbonaceous fuel, the proportion of oxygen being at least such that complete combustion of the fuel occurs; the oxygen and fuel are supplied by a multi-jet nozzle which is so disposed within the refining vessel that the products of combustion, but not the flame, impinge on the bath. An excess of oxygen may be employed, amounting to more than 1000% of the quantity required for complete combustion, or alternatively the excess may be 150% to 200% of that quantity. The fuel may be natural gas containing methane or ethane or may be a waste gas from a petroleum refining plant. A lance such as that disclosed in Specification 1, 021, 099 may be employed; thus may be modified by lagging the fuel supply pipe or providing an additional pipe surrounding that pipe to minimize cooling of the fuel.
