Abstract

1413793 Burners EXXON RESEABCH & ENG CO 7 Dec 1972 [10 Dec 1971] 57494/71 Heading F4T To improve combustion in flames, wherein a carbon-containing fuel is combusted with a fuel oxidant, additional oxidant is injected directly into a potential fuel pyrolysis and oxidant depleted region of the flame. The method is applicable to solid, semi-solid, liquid or gaseous fuels, with air or oxygen as the oxidant and may be combined with fuel/air premixing and/or air injection to the periphery or base of the flame and/or steam injection. The method can be applied to furnaces, gas turbines, boilers and refinery waste gas flares and may also be applied to a process wherein incomplete combustion produces reducing or neutral combustion products for application in industrial, e.g. metallurgical, processes, or to a second combustion stage to which the method is again applied. The method can also be applied to non-atmospheric burners. In general 3 to 20%, preferably 5 to 8%, of the total oxidant consumed in a flame is directly injected into the oxidantdepleted region. A model flare stack has a fuel supply tube 10 and a streamlined distributer 14 directly injecting air into an oxidant-depleted flame region, the distributer 14 being movable relative to the tube 10 to allow for variation in flame length. The directly injected oxidant is preferably injected just upstream of the brightest part of the flame.
