Abstract
760,385. Gasifying carbonaceous fuels. KOPPERS GES., H. Dec. 21, 1954 [Dec. 24, 1953], No. 36934/54. Classes 55 (1) and 55 (2). A process of gasifying powdered solid, liquid or gaseous carbonaceous fuels comprises forming a first mixture of a fuel and oxygen or oxygen-enriched air, the amount of oxygen in the mixture being in excess of the amount necessary to convert all of the carbon of the fuel in the mixture to carbon dioxide, forming a second mixture of a fuel and oxygen or oxygen-enriched air, the amount of oxygen in the second mixture being less than the amount necessary to convert all of the carbon of the fuel in the second mixture to carbon dioxide and the total oxygen content of both mixtures being insufficient to convert the total carbon content of both mixtures to carbon dioxide, injecting the first mixture into a reaction chamber maintained at at least the ignition temperature of the mixture so that the first mixture ignites immediately on entering the reaction chamber, injecting the second mixture into the reaction chamber so that the hot products of combustion of the first mixture promote partial combustion of the fuel in the second mixture and forming therewith a third mixture which is contacted with an endothermic gasifying agent comprising steam and/or carbon dioxide. The endothermic gasifying agent is introduced into the reaction chamber as an annular stream surrounding the first mixture and the second mixture is injected between the two and is directed into the combustion zone of the first mixture. A quantity of fuel up to about 5 per cent of the total fuel is incorporated in the first mixture and finely-divided non-volatile inorganic material may be included in the mixture to increase the amount of heat radiated to the second mixture. Suitable inorganic materials are powdered ashes, metal oxides, particularly those of alkaline earth metals and metal salts. Any combination of liquid, gaseous or solid fuels may be used in the two mixtures of fuel and oxygen or oxygenenriched air. The steam as endothermic gasifying agent is superheated to 500-600‹ C. and in an example the gas produced contained 43 per cent each of carbon non-oxide and hydrogen. Apparatus for carrying out the process comprises an injector nozzle for the first mixture, a coaxial annular nozzle for the endothermic gasifying agent and one or more conduits located between the above two nozzles for the injection of the second mixture.
