Abstract

673,161. Gasifying powdered fuel. KOPPERS CO., Inc. Dec. 24, 1948 [Dec. 29, 1947; Dec. 29, 1947], Nos. 33294/48 and 33295/48. Classes 55 (i) and 55 (ii). Finely-divided coal, lignite, &c. is injected by a stream of oxygen into a heat-insulated chamber and ignited, a cohesive stream of endothermically reacting gases (steam, carbon dioxide) being maintained along the chamber walls so that ash from the exothermic reaction contacts with the.steam &c. before reaching the walls and is thereby cooled to permit of separation in solid form. Finely pulverized coal, coke, steam coal, lignite, &c. fed by a conveyer 9 from a hopper 9a is mixed with oxygen or gases with a higher oxygen content than air in a chamber 7 whence it is delivered through a water-jacketed nozzle 5 into a reaction chamber 2, together with an annular stream of steam, carbon dioxide, or mixtures, preferably preheated to about 1200‹ C., from a pipe 6. This stream which may be supplemented from one or more annular channels 11 reacts endothermically with ungasified carbon from the control zone of partial combustion producing carbon monoxide; solid residues do not reach the temperature of the reaction gases which are withdrawn through an outlet 12. In an escape gas produced by gasifying coal with a mixture of carbon dioxide and steam comprises carbon monoxide 66.8, hydrogen 23.2, carbon dioxide 7.5, nitrogen 1.9 and hydrogen sulphide 0.6 per cent by volume.
