Abstract

1473395 Gasification of carbonaceous solids RALPH M PARSONS 23 Aug 1974 [13 Sept 1973] 37061/74 Heading C5E Gas containing hydrogen and carbon monooxide is produced by reacting an ash-containing carbonaceous solid with steam and a gaseous source of oxygen in a gasification bed contained in the lower portion of a gasification reactor at a temperature (e.g. 1000-2500‹ C.) which is below the melting point of the ash, a portion of the carbonaceous material is removed from the gasification zone and reacted with a gaseous source of oxygen in a combustion zone at a temperature (e.g. 2000-3000‹ F.) above the melting point of the ash to form a slag and a gas stream containing carbon oxides and free oxygen which gas stream is fed into the gasification zone. Coal, coke or char is reacted in a fluidized bed gasification zone 10 with steam and either air or oxygen; a portion 20 of the carbonaceous solid is continuously passed to a combustion zone 18 together with dust 16 separated from the gaseous product 12. The combustion zone 18 can comprise a cyclone burner and is fed with air or oxygen and if desired steam to produce a gaseous stream 24, which is passed into the gasification zone, and a slag which is quenched at 26 with water.
