Abstract

585,354. Distillation of solid fuel. ARNOLD, J. C. (Standard Oil Development Co.). Oct. 27, 1943, No. 17764. [Class 55 (i)] In a process for the distillation of solid carbonaceous materials, a stream of fluidized finely divided, carbonaceous particles is fed into a vertical reaction zone, the solids being maintained as a relatively dense fluidized phase dispersed and entrained in an upwardly flowing gas stream to which is supplied an oxidizing gas, with or without steam, whereby a portion of the carbonaceous material is burned, the heat produced converting the remainder to fuel products which are withdrawn from the reaction zone and the solid products are withdrawn as a fluidized stream. As shown, coke or coal is fed into a hopper 1 where is is dispersed as a dense suspension in gas or superheated steam, the suspension being then led through a pipe 6 to a reaction vessel 7. Air and steam, the latter preferably superheated in vessel 9, are admitted with the suspension and controlled so that there is partial combustion of the coal or coke, sufficient heat being generated to cause reaction with the steam to form carbon monoxide and hydrogen, which fuel products are 'removed through a dust separator 10 in the upper portion of the vessel. The solid products of the reaction are withdrawn through a pipe 12 in the bottom of the vessel. If steam is not added to the reaction vessel the fuel products are in the form of liquid fuels. The particle size may vary from below 50 mesh to ¢ inch and the velocity of the fluidizing gas from 1 to 20 feet per second. Other carbonaceous materials, e.g., peat, lignite, tar sand and shale may also be treated.
