Abstract

586,391. Distilling and gasifying solid carbonaceous materials. ARNOLD, C. (Standard Oil Development Co.). Feb. 4, 1944, No. 2116. [Class 55 (i)] A process for obtaining fuel gas from coal, coke; peat, shale, tar sands &c. in so called fluidized suspension, i.e., dispersed pulverulent form in a fluid stream, comprises passing the stream through at least two chambers in which combustion and carbonization or gasification are respectively effected, heat for the second chamber being carried from the first by continuous streams of the fluidized solid. In apparatus including both carbonization and water gas generation chambers, finely ground coal dropping from a crusher 1 is dispersed in superheated steam introduced by a pipe 3 and carried into a carbonization chamber 5, solid products being blown thence through a pipe 8 into a combustion chamber 9 by air admitted through a pipe 10, and distillates passed through a cooler 13 and apparatus for recovery of tar, light oils, ammonia and fuel gas. A continuous stream of material from the combustion chamber returns to chamber 5 through a pipe 11 and another is discharged through a pipe 11<1> into a generator 18 which is also supplied with superheated steam through a pipe 19. Combustion products from chamber 9 pass to a dust separator 15 and cooler and waste heat boiler 16 and the water gas after treatment in a dust separator 21 and cooler 22 may be mixed with some or all of the distillation gases..Temperatures in chambers 5, 9, 18 may be 500-1200‹F, 1800-2400‹F., and 1400-2000‹F. respectively. The gasification step may be cut out by means of a valve in pipe 11<1> or coke as the raw material may be fed directly into pipe 8 and the carbonization chamber cut out. Some of the water gas generated may be treated catalytic.ally with steam and the carbon dioxide removed, the hydrogen being employed to hydrogenate the liquid distillation products from the original carbonization. Inert material such as sand may be added to the coal or accumulating ash serve as additional heat carrier; lime, magnesia &c. may be included to raise the ash melting point.
