Abstract

611,924. Gas-producers; coking processes. STANDARD OIL DEVELOPMENT CO., and ARNOLD, C. Feb. 14, 1946, No. 4684. Addition to 586,391. [Class 55(i)] In the process of the parent Specification some of the heat required in one or more of the gasification zones or all the heat required in one or more but not all of them, is generated by partial combustion of the material therein with oxidizing gas, and the fluidized solid stream is fed into each zone beneath the level of the fluidized bed. Finely ground coal &c. from a crusher 1 is dispersed in a gas such as superheated steam, nitrogen, or combustion gases and passed into a carbonization chamber 5 whence the stream of solids is withdrawn through a pipe 7 and caused by the introduction of an oxidizing gas such as air or oxygen through an inlet 10 to flow into a gasification chamber 9 into which steam, superheated by contact in a chamber 24 with material discharged from chamber 9, is passed. Another stream of discharged material is supplied to chamber 5 through a pipe 11, and part of that passing through chamber 24 may also be returned through a pipe 26 to preheat the initial charge, the rest being discharged through an outlet 27 to prevent accumulation of non-carbonaceous material in the system. Distillates from chamber 5 pass through a cooler 13 and water gas &c. from chamber 9 after separation of dust imparts heat to a steam boiler 16. Oxidizing gas may be added to chamber 5 to generate combustion heat in the chamber, the amounts of hot solids returned through pipes 11, 26 being reduced correspondingly. Sand or other inert material, and also alumina, lime, magnesia or coal of higher ash melting point, to raise the ash melting point, may be added to the coal.
