Abstract

744,742. Iron manufacture. WEBER, L. May 9, 1951 [May 11, 1950], No. 10969/51. Class 72. [Also in Group XII] Fuels either fine-grained or in the form of small lumps are gasified in one or more stages by intimate and moving contact effected by means within the furnace with a granular ore serving as a heat carrier heated in a separate furnace to above the gasification temperature and separated from any fuel residues at the end of the stage or stages by means utilizing the different physical properties of the residues. As heat carrier solids iron, heavy metals, or ores or oxides or ceramic masses in which e.g. metal oxides may be embedded, may be used, preferably with rough or porous surfaces or catalytic effect and readily separable from the fuel residues. The gases generated may be utilized for smelting, particularly for obtaining iron sponge, crude iron or steel, the ore being passed directly to the smelting furnace after use as heat carrier in generating the gases. For gasifying lumpy fuels in a shaft furnace 1 by means of steam injected through an inlet 5 fine-grained heat carrier material is introduced at the top and sifted off at the bottom through an inclined grate 2, unconsumed fuel being controllably removed past a slide 4 e.g. to a boiler furnace 10. The raw fuel may be coked in a rotating cylinder 8 by contact with the heat carrier material before this is returned to a heater 9. For gasifying finer fuels, e.g. peat, brown coal or lignite up to 10 mm. or pit coal up to 3 mm., a substantially horizontal rotating furnace may be employed having internal helical grooves, &c. by means of which the heat carrier fed in at one end is carried forward, repeatedly falling as a dense rain through a blast of steam and fuel introduced at the other end. In another embodiment dust fuel is suspended in a chamber into which the heat carrier is passed from above. Heavy hydrocarbons may be introduced with the fuel to produce a carburetted gas.
