Abstract

In a process for the gasification of fuels in which a slag bath is maintained in undulating and circulatory movement by the flow energy of gasifying agents and optionally fuel flowing into the bath, the gasification is effected by means of chemical change in alternate directions of at least one constituent of the slag. In an example in which the slag contains <PICT:0841569/IV(b)/1> calcium oxide, fine-grained or powdery coke of Rhein brown coal is introduced into the slag bath 1 through pipe 2 and oxygen is forced in through pipe 3. Part of the coke evolves carbon monoxide with liberation of heat, another portion of the coke reacting with the calcium oxide in the slag to form calcium carbide and carbon monoxide with the absorption of heat. The coke also reacts with the iron oxide which is present in the slag to form carbon monoxide and also crude steel which is discharged through the taphole 4. The calcium carbide and any other unreactive slag, for instance silicon oxide, runs off through overflow 5 and is cooled and comminuted in the crusher mill 8. The slag collected in bunker 9 is cooled to 100 DEG C., conveyed by mechanism 11 to a bunker 12, and passed via bucket wheel 13 and conveyer screw 14 to a generator 15 wherein the slag is subjected in a fluidized stage to the action of steam passed in at 17. The acetylene which is produced, leaves through pipe 19, slag entrained therewith being separated in a cyclone separator 20 to fall into bunker 21. The slag in bunker 21 is delivered to bunker 23 and part is returned to the slag bath 1 through pipe 26, excess being removed from the cycle. The temperature in the gasifier 6 is about 1700-1900 DEG C. The slag may be obtained from solid fuels, smelting ores, naturally occurring minerals or synthetically produced oxides. The slag bath may be lined with heat-insulating material or the walls of the vessel may be cooled so as to form thereon a solid layer of slag crust. The reactions may be carried out at pressures above or below atmospheric.ALSO:<PICT:0841569/III/1> In a process for the gasification of fuels in which a slag bath is maintained in undulating and circulatory movement by the flow energy of gasifying agents and optionally fuel flowing into the bath, the gasefication is effected by means of chemical change in alternate directions of at least one constituent of the slag.
