Abstract

In a method of continuously making shaped coke articles by means of a circulating granular heat carrier, e g sand, shaped coal articles (briquettes) and hot sand are charged into the upper end of a reactor 1 and passed downwardly therethrough with the articles embedded in the sand, the coke being separated at the bottom at 7 from the sand and cooled at 9, and the sand being simultaneously reheated and recycled pneumatically to the top of the reactor at 14. The upper portion 2 of the charge in the reactor is maintained as a fluidized bed using the distillation gases as fluidizing gas, the cross-section of the reactor and the ratio of sand to <PICT:1122134/C4-C5/1> coal being selected accordingly. Pulses of a gas introduced at 5 periodically force the coke and sand over a weir 6 on to a screen 7, the sand returning via a tube 8 and a fluidized bed 12 to a riser 14 supplied with gases from a combustion chamber 15. Fuel gas may be supplied at 16 to burn coke in the sand with excess oxygen in the gases. Cooling at 9 is by a gas cooled indirectly at 11. Hot gas from 9 may alternatively be directed to the coal hopper 22 to preheat or swell the coal, as illustrated. Gas, e.g. steam, may be introduced at 3.
