Abstract

<PICT:1005635/C4-C5/1> In a process for the rapid carbonization of strongly or weakly agglutinating coal, lignite, or bituminous shale, in granular form in a moving bed of carbonaceous particles, in which the particles are circulated between the carbonization reactor 2 and a reheating reactor 1, the coal and the particles descend under gravity as a fluidized bed in the reactor 2 and ascend in a flow of oxidizing gas, e.g. air, through the reactor 1, where partial combustion occurs, a screen 3 separating the particles, which pass back to the reactor 2, from the grains (now a semi-coke) which are withdrawn at 14. The particles are preferably coke of size less than 3 mm., and the coal is preferably of size 3 to 20 mm. Fresh coal enters at 4, distillation gases leave via louvres 7 and a chamber 6, fluidizing gas, e.g. air, enters at 9, 10, and a loss of particles is compensated for by introducing fresh particles either at 4 or 11. In a modified apparatus, Fig. 2 (not shown), the reactors 1 and 2 are separate. A carbonization temperature of 750 DEG C. for times of 30 seconds and 45 seconds is mentioned.
