Abstract

<PICT:1006043/C4-C5/1> In a method of carbonizing in a reactor 5 by partial combustion in a fluidized bed 19 coal fines which have been preheated in a fluidized bed 2, gases generated in the reactor 5 are de-dusted at 14 and delivered to a chamber 4 from which a regulatable portion is extracted at 12, 13 and the remainder is passed to a chamber 3 for total combustion with air, the combustion gases being passed to 2 to fluidize and heat the raw fines, preferably to 300 DEG to 400 DEG C. The heated fines are passed via line 6 to the reactor 5, and dust removed at 14 may be returned to the bed 19. Coke or semi-coke is removed at 17 and cooled at 16.
