Abstract

874,302. Carbonizing coal. CHARBONNAGES DE FRANCE. Oct. 6, 1958 [Oct. 30, 1957], No. 31874/58. Class 55 (1). In a fluidized two-stage process of carbonizing coal, the coal is subjected to a low-temperature carbonization at a temperature between 450‹ and 600‹ C. in a zone 2 and to a high-temperature carbonization at a temperature over 700‹ C. in a zone 3, a fluidizing gas for the lower zone being admitted at 5 and the hot gases rising from the zone 3 serving to heat and fluidize the coal in zone 2. The fluidizing gas supplied to the zone 3 may be preheated and be an inert gas or a gas containing free oxygen. The coal fed to zone 2 is preferably preheated to between 300‹ and 400‹ C. in a fluidized preheating zone and coke withdrawn through line 8 may be cooled in a fluidized cooling zone.
