Abstract
848,580. Coking. ESSO RESEARCH & ENGINEERING CO. Nov. 13, 1957 [Dec. 31, 1956], No. 35390/57. Addition to 766,761. Classes 55 (1) and 55 (2). In a process of calcining coke particles, obtained by coking petroleum oils in a fluidized bed, in which coke from line 2 is passed in the form of a gaseous suspension at high velocity through a transfer line heater 1, the coke being heated by the combustion of a gaseous fuel entering at 7 with an oxygen-containing gas entering at 6, followed by passing the coke to a calcining zone 10 where it is soaked at an elevated temperature in the presence of an inert gas, the gaseous fuel is supplied in an amount of 0.5 to 1.5 S.C.F. per lb. of coke solids and the oxygen-containing gas in an amount so that there is 10 to 30% excess oxygen, based on the weight of the coke, after combustion of the gaseous fuel. The oxygen-containing gas, such as air, is passed from blower 3 to a preheater 5 where it is heated to a temperature of 500‹ to 1500‹ F. The coke is heated to 2400‹ F. to 3000‹ F. in the transfer line heater and has a residence time of 0.4 to 2.0 seconds. The solids are discharged from the cyclone separator 8 into the soaker 10 wherein it is maintained at a temperature of 2400 ‹ F. to 3000 ‹ F. for 1 to 2 hours in a moving bed with a gas velocity just below that required for fluidization. The gas supplied may be nitrogen.
