Abstract

768,656. Combustible processes. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABHIK AKT.-GES. Sept. 9, 1954 [Sept. 15, 1953], No. 26117/54. Class 51 (1). A process for the combustion of solid fuels, in particular those having a high ash content and the recovery of the heat of combustion consists in introducing the fuel in a finelydivided state into a fluidized layer of non- combustible solid particles kept at combustion temperature, removing the ash from the layer according to the measure of its enrichment therewith, withdrawing the heat of the layer not needed for maintaining the combustion temperature with the aid of heat-absorbing members arranged in or around the layer and then utilizing the heat. The non-combustible particles are preferably ash particles originating from the fuel itself and are kept in the fluidized state by combustion air introduced from below but in the use of fuels of poor ash yield or very finely-powered the height of the layer is maintained by the introduction of small-particled, non-combustible solid material such as chamotte grains, roasted pyrites, &c. Substances which contain iron oxide are preferred. The heat may be withdrawn from the layer through tubes containing heat carriers such as boiling water under pressure up to 150 atmosphere, metal or salt melts, or water under pressure or at such flow speeds that the boiling temperature is not reached. Vaporizable liquids such as mercury may also be used: Gaseous heat carriers at e.g. 4 to 20 atmospheres, may also be used, the gas being subsequently used in a gas turbine. After use in the turbine the carrier may be used to preheat the fluidized layer combustion air and/or for drying moist carbonaceous materials to be injected into the layer. The combustion gases leaving the layer may also be used to dry moist materials and this drying may take place in a chamber utilizing the fluidized technique, the moist material forming the solid particles in suspension. In cases where ash-rich coals are burnt the heat of the ash and flue dust leaving the layer may be recovered and used for heating combustion air. The grain size in which the fuel is introduced should preferably be less than 10 mm. and the height of the layer in the quiescent state between 200 and 1000 mm.
