Abstract
724,774. Fuel; coking. KRUPPA, W. J., and RINCKHOFF, J. B. Jan. 5, 1953 [Jan. 18, 1952], No. 307/53. Classes 50 and 55 (1). Badly swelling and caking coals, in pulverized form, are treated, prior to coking, by flash heating whilst being maintained in fluidized condition by ordinary air, the heating and consequent oxidation being at a temperature between about 675‹ F. and 800‹ F., the oxidized coal being quickly cooled and separated from the carrier air. As shown, coal pulverized in a mill 2 is picked up by hot air delivered from a furnace 3 by means not shown, the coal, thus dried, being delivered, via a cyclone separator 6, to a tank 15 provided with level indicators L2, L3 and a pressure indicator. The hot coal is fed from the tank 15 through a valve 16<SP>1</SP> to a fluidizing pump 16, fluidizing air being provided by a compressor 17, the pump delivering the coal through a pipe 24 to the heating coil 21 in the oxidizer which is fired by a gas or oil burner 27. Cooling of the coal is immediately effected in the coil 22 by means of a spray 32. A cyclone separator 23 delivers the coal to a briquetting press, or through the line 35 to storage. Samples for periodic checks are withdrawn at 37. Air from the cyclone 6 is recycled to the mill 2 by a fan 8, a part of the recycled air being vented at 13 after being divested of dust in the cyclone separator 11. The briquetted coal is converted into coke by carborizing in a stream of hot tar-denuded gases derived from the distillation of the briquettes.
