737,350. Distilling coal. STEINKOHLEN-ELEKTRIZITAT AKT.-GES. Aug. 12, 1953 [Aug. 14, 1952], No. 22237/53. Class 55 (1). [Also in Group XIII] Coal is carbonized by being pneumatically conveyed through tubes 5 arranged in a chamber 2 separately fired to but adjacent to' a steam boiler 1, the arrangement being such that the tubes 4 of the boiler 1 cool the walls of the chamber 2 and the waste gases from the chamber 2 mix with those from the boiler 1. The coal to be carbonized is fed from a bunker 14 to a charging device 6; steam or distillation gas may be used as the carrier gas and oxygen may be added thereto if desired. Coal from bunker 7 is fed by tubes 8 to the burners of the chamber 2 and optionally also to the burners of the boiler 1. Wholly or partly carbonized coal is recovered in a separator 10 and the separated material passes to a hopper 11; carbonization gases leave by line 12. Material from the hopper. 11 may be fed by tubes to the chamber 2 and/or the boiler 1. When the coal is only partly carbonized, the carbonization may be completed by, for example, contacting the partly carbonized coal with highly heated heat-transfer material. In a modification the wholly or partly carbonized coal may provide all the fuel for firing chamber 2 and the boiler 1 and the coal being carbonized may pass through the tube system in counterflow to the flow of flue gases in the chamber 2.
