[Class 51 (ii)] A setting for vertical retorts employed for the carbonization of carbonaceous material is provided with means for supplying fuel gas and air at will to the top or bottom of the heating- walls and for withdrawing the waste gases at will from the bottom or top respectively of the heating-walls. As shown in Figs. 1 and 5, fuel gas is supplied from a conduit 3 to a vertical gas flue 5 which supplies gas through dampered openings 8, 8' to horizontal flues 9, 9<1>, 18, 18<1>, and 20, 20' which are also supplied with air from ducts 10<1>, vertical flues 6, 6<1> and dampered openings 12, 12<1> The combustion products pass from the horizontal flues which are interconnected by dampered openings 13, 13<1> either downwardly or upwardly to the vertical outlet flue 15, provided with dampered openings 14, 14<1>, 19, 21. Fig. 1 shows the upper and lower pairs of flues 18<1>, 20<1> dampered off, the six upper pairs of flues 9, 9<1> being supplied with heating gases while the four lower pairs of flues 9, 9<1> merely carry the combustion products over the lower ends of the retorts to the flue 15. Fuel and air may be supplied to any of the horizontal flues as desired and may be conducted both upwardly and downwardly to the outlet flue 15. According to a modification, the vertical gas and air supply flues 5, 6, 6<1> extend upwardly and downwardly over a part only of the heating-wall. Specification 537,585 is referred to.
