[Class 51 (ii)] A setting for horizontal retorts comprises one or more pairs of spaced vertical walls 10 having heating flues 11, the space between adjacent walls being divided into a series of horizontal retorts 13 by horizontal bonder blocks 12 spaced at intervals so that the walls form the sides of the retorts. The walls are built up of U-shaped and hollow blocks to form the flues 11 and between the adjacent walls of each series of retorts is arranged a recuperator for heating the air for combustion supplied at the lower ends of the flues 11. Gas is supplied to the lower ends of the flues 11 from conduits 17 and passages 18 controlled by dampers. Air for combustion is admitted to the recuperator by valve controlled inlets 19 and passes through the passages 20, 21, 22 of the recuperator to the bottoms of the flues 11 to mix with gas at 11a. The gases from the flues 11 pass under the control of dampers at the top of the flues to passages 24, 25 in the recuperator and thence through the damper-controlled port 26 to the waste gas flue 27. The retort walls and bonder blocks may be made of silica while the recuperator may be made of fireclay a straight joint being provided between the recuperator and retort walls to allow for the different expansion of the materials.
