Abstract

981,071. Coke ovens. KOPPERS CO. Inc. April 13, 1962 [April 13, 1961], No. 14463/62. Heading F4B. In a Kopper-type coke oven, the heating flues are divided by partition walls 14 into vertical heating flues, adjacent flues being fed by riser ducts 23 within the partition walls terminating in elevated ports 24, 25 arranged to open upwardly into the flues to give gas flows parallel to any gas flow from low burner parts at the base of the flues. In a regenerative compound cross-over coke oven, Fig. 1, the regenerators 8 are arranged in groups of three, a lean gas heating regenerator G feeding low burners through a duct 26 and high burners through ducts 28 and risers 23, being flanked by smaller air heating regenerators A, A, one of which feeds the low burners through ducts 27 and the other feeding the high burners via ducts 29 and risers 23. This ensures that the waste gases are not fed to regenerators adjacent to those heating combustible gas. The high burners may all be at the same level, or the burners fed through adjacent partition walls may be at different levels, so that each vertical flue is fed with gas at two elevated burners and at the bottom, Fig. 4, not shown. The size of the ports 24, 25 is controlled by throttles adjustable through holes 7 in the oven roof, interchangeable throttle blocks 36, or sleeves 49, Fig. 10, resting in shoulders formed in ledges 35 at the top of the thickened lower part of the partition walls 14 which accommodates the riser ducts 23. The high burners may be controlled by sliding throttle blocks, Fig. 11, not shown. The thickened parts of the partition walls are spaced from the walls of the coke chambers, and may be offset towards one or other coke chamber wall so as to facilitate adjustment of the lower burners by replaceable plugs 42 and of the rich gas throttles 30.
