Abstract

538,202. Coke ovens. JACKSON, L. MELLERSH- (Koppers Co.). Jan. 25, 1940, No. 1501. [Class 51 (ii)] In a coke oven having one or more coking chambers with vertical heating flues supplied with regeneratively pre-heated air and non- regeneratively heated fuel gas, the air is introduced at a higher level than the gas through interchangeable nozzles, while the gas is introduced at or substantially at the level of the flue base. In cases where the flues are supplied with regeneratively heated air and either non- regeneratively heated rich or regeneratively heated lean gas, the air or air and lean gas mixture are supplied through nozzles at any desired level according to the length of the nozzles. Fig. 1 shows a Becker type oven in which regeneratively heated air is supplied to the flues 12 by nozzles 22, one of which is shown in Fig. 6 with means for effecting its removal. Rich gas is supplied through nozzles 23 at the base of the flues. The size of the ducts in the nozzles 22 is graduated from the pusher to the coke side of the battery. Fig., 7 shows an oven of the kind described in Specification 448,282 heated by rich gas supplied through nozzles 23 and regeneratively heated air through nozzles 22 or by a mixture of regeneratively heated air and lean gas supplied through ports 16, 31 into a common port 32 provided with interchangeable nozzles 22.
