[Classes 51 (i) and 51 (ii)] In a gas or other retort furnace heated by superposed horizontal flues through which the heating gases flow in series, combustion products are returned to a flue such as 2a, in which combustion is effected from the next higher flue 2b through a port 8 above a guide plate 4, so arranged that the fresh combustion gases exert an injector action on the gases to be recirculated. The guide plate, which slopes downwards in the direction of flow and extends over the full width of the flue, may be adjustable lengthwise or on inclination. The connecting ports between adjacent flues are controlled by dampers 9, 11.
