Abstract
485,852. Retort furnaces. JONES, F. W. SALISBURY-, and NISBET, R. Nov. 21, 1936, No. 14378. [Class 51 (ii)] In a setting for vertical retorts heating-gases are caused to flow in proximity to a retort or retort chamber from heating or combustion passages or flues extending longitudinally in relation to the retort and supplied at spaced positions with heating-gases, the direction of flow of the gases in the combustion flues or passages differing from that of the gases when in contact with the retort or retort chamber. As shown, walls il built of tongued and grooved panel bricks separate the retort chamber h from the combustion spaces i, which are fired by horizontally-delivering burners k. The walls i are tied to the main walls of the setting by staggered bricks j. _ The combustion products pass downwards through the spaces i and then upwards through the retort chamber h in contact with the retort. A portion of the waste gases may be withdrawn for recirculation by a fan either before they have left the setting, or after the part of their heat has been utilized for preheating the charge in the feed hopper. The air for combustion is heated in vertical flues in the setting and is supplied through damper-controlled ports l<2>. Specification 481,584 is referred to.
