Abstract
525,518. Retort furnaces. KEMP, A. V. Feb. 28, 1939, No. 6548. [Class 51 (ii)] In a retort furnace setting comprising a series of vertical retorts 10 oblong in cross section with their major axes arranged in parallel lines and vertical heating flues 13 arranged on each side of the retorts, the supply of air and gas to the heating flues on each side of the retorts is separately controlled by means located outside the setting while the combustion products from each heating wall or from groups of heating walls pass into separate collecting flues controlled by dampers in the end wall of the setting. Gas passes by separate flues 22 controlled by dampers 23 outside the setting to the mixing chambers 14 at the base of the flues 13, and the control of gas to supply to the individual flues may be effected by dampers 24. Secondary and tertiary air are supplied to the mixing chambers and flues by pipes 25, 28 having control valves 26, 29 below the setting. The combustion products pass from the flues 13 through openings 15 controlled by dampers 16 to collecting flues 17 provided in the end wall with dampers 19.
