Abstract

420,541. Glass -melting furnaces. GEER, P. L., 132, South Euclid Avenue, Bellevue, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. July 10, 1933, No. 19504. [Classes 51 (i) and 51 (ii)] In a recuperative glass melting tank the heating-gases are returned to the firing end of the furnace through a flue 9 within the furnace structure, and pass thence to a chamber 14, from which they are distributed evenly over the whole cross section of the recuperator 2. A waste gas and ash collecting chamber 23 at the lower end of the recuperator communicates through a number of outlets 27 with an exhaust manifold 28. Air is admitted through dampered openings 26 and flows in a number of horizontal passes, around the vertical heating-gas tubes 22. In alignment with the tubes 22 are stoppered poke holes 30. The furnace is fired by two burners passing through air ports one at each side of the waste gas flue 13 and the products of combustion pass to the return flue 9 either between the walls 7, 8, or through a dampered opening 11. In a modification (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown), the furnace is at a lower level relatively to the recuperator and a slag collecting chamber is interposed between the return flue and the distributing chamber 14.
