Abstract
384,074. Glass furnaces. SCHœFFLER, J., 101, Ruhrallee, Essen, Germany. Nov. 27, 1931, No. 32952. [Class 51 (ii).] A pot furnace for melting glass is heated by one or more tangentially delivering burners 6 of the type in which gas and air are burnt in narrow passages in a refractory brick, and the combustion products escape through a number of dampercontrolled ports 9 in the floor leading to two waste gas flues 10. The dampers are so set that the effective openings of the ports increase in the direction of flow of the gases. Passages 12 are also formed beneath the pots and from these damper-controlled flues 13 lead to the flues 10. The waste gases are exhausted through flues 16 containing removable pipes 17 for heating the air for combustion. In the event of the fracture of a pot the glass runs down inclines 11 into the flues 9, and is collected in a sump. When a number of melting chambers are built together in a battery provision may be made for passing the waste gases from one chamber into another which is temporarily out of action, but which needs to be kept hot.
