Combustion chambers, secondary.-In a muffle or like furnace, the combustion chamber b is in communication with one or more side flues having individually regulable ports h leading to the flue c' in the floor of the heating- chamber. From the flue c<1>, the gases pass through at the sides of the muffle and a flue f above the crown of the muffle to the stack. Ports may provide direct communication between the combustion chamber b and the flue c<1> and the flues at the sides of the muffle may also be connected directly with the combustion chamber or the flues at the side thereof. The air for combustion may be heated by the waste gases in the flue f, and may be supplied at two or more points to the combustion products. Two furnaces heated by a single fire-place may be built side by side, Ports may be provided for passing some of the furnace gases into the heating-chamber.
