Abstract

152,319. Bansen, H., and Faconeisen- Walzwerk L. Mannstaedt et Cie Akt.- Ges. Dec. 2, 1918, [Convention date]. Reverberatory and open-hearth furnaces.-In a gas-fired furnace, combustion is effected in a transverse chamber having burner ports at both ends. In one construction, Figs. 2 and 3, in which the combustion chamber g is at one end of the furnace, gas and air are supplied through flues a, c respectively, and are admitted to the combustion chamber through ports b, e, and ignition chambers f. The two air-supply ports e are inclined at different angles so that the two flames will not meet directly. Additional gas may be admitted to the combustion chamber through ports in the wall k. In another construction, the combustion chamber is arranged at the middle of the length of the furnace, and the waste-gas outlets at the ends lead to a recuperator beneath, the gases from one outlet passing through the whole length of the recuperator flues, and from the other through half the length only. In another modification, Fig. 6, combustion chambers are provided at both ends of the furnace, and the waste-gas outlets l are at the middle of its length, either in the walls, as shown, or in the floor. A baffle x ensures equal division of the waste gases between the two paths of flow in the recuperator. When the combustion chambers are arranged at both ends or in the middle, the furnace may be divided into two independent hearths by a partition.
