Open-hearth furnaces; slag, collecting. - In an open hearth furnace for use in the manufacture of iron and steel, the slag chamber g and the regenerators m are not built into the same structure, but are separated by a length of duct, in which the reversing-valve l may be arranged. The furnace is fired by gas and air supplied through ports at one end, and at the opposite end the products of combustion divide, part passing to the slag chamber and the regenerator through the flue f, and the remainder to an auxiliary furnace g', which may serve for reheating, roasting, calcining, or agglomerating, and may be of rotary form. From the reversing-valve l the products pass through one or other of the reegnerator chambers, and a second valve n to the chimney. The air to be heated enters at the valve n passes through a regenerator chamber, the valve l, and flue q, and is delivered into the furnace through the port b.
