[Class 51 (ii)] A continuous brick kiln comprises a number of individually fired adjoining chambers, beneath which are flues for gases of combustion and hot air communicating with passages in the partition walls leading to the chambers whereby the hot combustion gases or the hot drying air from cooling chambers may be circulated at will through each chamber. Each chamber has one or more firegrates 14 at each end; an arched roof, a central transverse flue 16 which is in controllable communication with main flues 17 leading to a fan or chimney 18 and has branch flues 16a in the chamber floor, hot air flues 24 and main flues 19 for hot gases of combustion. Hot gases may pass directly into the next chamber through flues 16a and 20 or may be lead from the main flue 19 by any of the flues 20a. Hot air from a cooling chamber may also be delivered to any point in advance through the flue 24, the forked flues 20b and the passages 20c, Fig. 6, above the chambers. Thus by the manipulation of the appropriate dampers any chamber in advance of the firing chamber may be supplied at either or both sides with hot gases of combustion or hot air. Primary combustion air enters at 15 below the grates, secondary air being introduced at the inner ends of the furnaces and tertiary air into the rising flues 20. The secondary and tertiary air may be either atmospheric or drawn from a cooling furnace or it may be superheated by circulation in passages above the chamber arch.
