Abstract

564,628. Brick &c. kilns. SHAW, W. C. April 15, 1943, No. 6064. Convention date, Oct. 5, 1942. [Class 51 (ii)] Bricks or the like are burnt by passing them through a number of chambers heated from a furnace so that they are subjected successively to drying, heating, burning, annealing and cooling, the bricks &c. being heated in the heating and annealing chambers by gases from the burning chamber and in the drying and cooling chambers by radiation from adjacent chambers. A kiln; for burning bricks is shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and comprises chambers 28, 27, 25, 26, 29 for drying, heating, burning, annealing and cooling respectively separated by partition walls 27a, 25a, 26a and provided with end walls 30, 31. These walls are supported on transverse partitions 9 and end walls 9a. Between the partitions 9 are arranged longitudinally plates 10 supporting a transverse row of bricks 15 on which are supported intermediate partition walls 15a. Hot gases from fire places 3 on either side of the kiln enter the burning compartment 25 and pass over the tops of the partition walls and through openings therein to the heating and annealing compartments 27, 26 from which they escape from flues 6, 5, 4 to the atmosphere. Heat is radiated from the chamber 27 to the drying-chamber 28 to which air is admitted from the atmosphere through openings in the end walls and the moist air passes to the atmosphere through a damper controlled flue 24. The cooling chamber 29 has similar air admission means and a damper controlled outlet flue 24. Fig. 7 shows a section of one of the partition walls of the kiln through which extend longitudinal channel bricks 16 arranged in vertical and horizontal rows throughout the length, width and height of the kiln and along which channels the bricks 21 to be burnt are moved by any suitable means. Bricks 17, 18, 19 of the partition wall surround the channels 16 leaving spaces 22 through which gases may pass from one compartment to the other.
